Michiana - Northwest Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan
By Tony Payne
Where is Michiana? Michiana is an area of Northern Indiana and Southwest Lower Michigan, the name being derived from the combination of the two states, MICHI-ANA. It lies about 90 miles east of Chicago, and 150 miles southwest of Detroit. It comprises the counties of Saint Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, La Porte and Starke in Indiana, and Berrien and Cass in Michigan. The area is mostly flat, and consists mostly of corn fields, dairy farms, woodland and many lakes and rivers. The major cities in Michiana lie in Indiana. Of these, South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart all lie close to each other, just south of Interstate 80, and only a few miles south of the Michigan State Line. As of the 2000 census, the population of those seven counties was 840,697 (627,140 in Indiana and 213,557 in Michigan). (from wikipedia) The Saint Joseph River flows through the region, from Michigan southwest to South Bend, and then north through Niles in Michigan to the city of Saint Joseph on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. South Bend was home to the Studebaker automobile plant until it closed in the 1960's, and it is now home to The Studebaker Muesum, which houses many old vehicles and is well worth a visit. There is another automobile link in the area with Mishawaka being home to the Hummer plant. This makes not only the military version of the Hummer, but the domestic versions as well. And finally, Elkhart is home the the RV Industry in the USA, many of the major RV manufacturers having residence there. Elkhart is the center of the Band Music industry too, with companies like Conn, King etc having grown up there from the early 1900's. Today they mostly come under the banner of the Conn-Selmer company, which also includes Steinway pianos and Ludwig drums. On the north side of South Bend is the University of Notre Dame, one of the USA's best known campuses and home to the famous Fighting Irish football team. Because of the Notre Dame connection, the College Football Hall Of Fame was relocated in South Bend in the 1990's, and both this and Notre Dame attract thousands of tourists to the area all year round, but especially during football season. There is a lot to see in this area, which also being only 40 miles from Lake Michigan includes the Indiana Dunes and other State Parks. The area also has several large Amish and Menonite communities, most notable Shipshewana and Nappannee. The museum and round theater at Amish Acres in Nappannee are a good place for a day out, as is one of the largest flea markets anywhere in Shipshewana. There are a number of links below which will provide more information on the area, the industry, cities, what do do and what to see, and major events. |

Great overview of the area!
I'm not familiar with the term, but then again I don't get over to Michigan enough (actually, ever). I need to go one of these days. Thanks for the info!
